(So this is my first post and I'm not too sure what I'm suppose to do, or how this whole thing really works so please bear with me. )
The first vignetter that we come across is "Jing-Mei Woo: The Joy Luck Club." We've already read about how her mother had suffered to come to a better life and we now know about her two abandoned siblings. I was wondering what you guys thought about her mother's situation and I was also wondering about your thoughts about Jing-Mei going to China to see and confront her two siblings. What do you think will happen? What do you think she'll say? Any thoughts about that?

I was so shocked when I read about her abandoning her two children! I was thinking how any mother could leave their child in the street, where they could die. To top it off, she chooses her three dresses over her child… that is just wrong. It seems to me that she cares about her clothing more than her children. I think she felt guilty about what she done, that’s why she wanted to find her two children. However, I somehow doubt that her two children would be happy to see her if they realized why their mother had abandon them, and choose to carried the dresses. I think when the sisters meet; they will be awkward. I know if suddenly one day someone comes and tell me that I have a sister that I have never heard of, I will be more shock and nervous than anything.
Truthfully, I just skipped past by the part when she said that her father wasn't the first man she was with and how she wasn't the only child she had. I thought it was something she said to make her story interesting. Later on the women in the Joy Luck Club tells Jing-Mei the secret and I was just surprised because it was kind of unexpected, but expecting at the same time. Since she agreed to go see them, I think she'll be very surprised and a surprise to her half-sister. Seeing how modest Jing-Mei is, I don't think she'll say much, other than "I'm your sister". I hope she says other things than that though.
I agree with Katherine. I was so shocked when I heard that part. I was like "Oh my gosh!" I can't believe she abandoned her two children for her clothes. She had to carry the food to survive but I dont see why she couldn't have used her dresses as a way to carry her children. (Like tie it around them and on her... do you guys get what I'm saying?) If she did do this, she would of had both and not have to abandon them. Also I think Jing-Mei won't say much to her half sisters as well. Like Thanh said, she is a modest, quiet girl. Meeting new people is awkward enough sometimes, but meeting family for the first time, that's more awkward. I think she'll try to explain to them what happened to their mother and that's it. Jing-Mei doesn't seem to want to say anything more. The Joy Luck club tells her to tell the sisters about her mother's journey, about who she is and about her lessons but I don't think Jing-Mei was really close to her mother to really know her mother well.
Yeah, I agree with Elaine, June aka Jing-Mei doesn’t seem like she had a close relationship with her mother. I think one of the reasons was because her mother kept on pushing her to be someone she’s not. Like she kept on making June practice piano, or tries to get her to be better at something that she's obviously not. I guess it’s just how Chinese parents are; they always comparing their sons and daughters with other people. Like how June’s mom kept on comparing June with Linda Jongs’ daughter Waverly. I know how it feels because my mom does it to me too, sometimes I just get so annoyed that I just ignore her.
